Mateli Kuivalatar was a female bard from Ilomantsi. Her poems can be found in Kanteletar, a well-known collection of Finnish folk poetry.

The two-parted museum buildings were moved to Parppeinvaara from Siitarinvaara in 1969. Museum buildings are from the birth house of Mateli Kuivalatar and are also named after her.

The singing shed of Mateli Kuivalatar was brought to Parppeinvaara from Kontiovaara in 1983. After tradition, Mateli Kuivalatar sat on its stairs and sung poems to Elias Lönnrot.
